Buffalo Bill Cody is one of the most iconic figures of the American West. American Experience, produced by PBS, has an excellent one hour program about Buffalo Bill. You can view the entire program for free on the PBS video website. In true PBS form, there are some excellent lesson plans for teachers to use in conjunction with the video. To provide student with context of where Buffalo Bill Cody fits in with the history of the American West, check out the American Frontiers interactive timeline.

A couple of days ago, I was asked what I thought was wrong in our nation's elementary schools. Although I spend a great deal of time wondering about how to improve teaching and learning, I had never considered the question from that perspective. I guess I'm a glass half full kind of gal. Yet after thinking about this over the past few days, I think that many of the challenges facing our nation's elementary schools are the same ones facing our secondary schools.

Welcome to Museum Box, This site provides the tools for you to build up an argument or description of an event, person or historical period by placing items in a virtual box. What items, for example, would you put in a box to describe your life; the life of a Victorian Servant or Roman soldier; or to show that slavery was wrong and unnecessary? You can display anything from a text file to a movie. You can also view and comment on the museum boxes submitted by others.

Like many of us, Sylvie is a big fan of Wordle.net, an online application for making word clouds. She showed me a really useful little tip that opens up all sorts of new possibilities – a way of including phrases in word clouds. Look below and you will see what I am talking about. The phrase that Sylvie demonstrates is “Once upon a time”.

We talked a little about how easy the program was to use (for teachers and students) and how they would explain what the image showed when they created some with their kids. But there was one question that caught me a little off guard. Why would I use this in my class? I tried to give the teacher as many examples as I could (summarizing text, survey results, etc) but she still couldn't wrap her mind around it. I wanted to hear from other classroom teachers and have them tell me what they used it for, in the hopes that not only this teacher would understand but I would have an amazing list the next time I talk about Wordle. (And so would you!)

Establishes as a baseline that educators, students and parents must be well versed in the 21st century skills that students need to acquire to be successful. Teachers should be able to make relevant and useful choices about when and how to teach them, and whether or not students are making progress toward their personal demonstration of accomplishment. Rethinking what we teach must come before we can rethink how we teach.

I give presentations to educators at every level, all around the world. All of the teachers are earnestly trying to adapt their educational system to the twenty-first century. During my talks, however, I typically look out at oceans of white hair. Never — I can't even say rarely — is a kid in sight or invited to the party.

Below you will find 50+ web tools you can use to create your own web-based story. Again, the mission is not to review or try every single one (that would be madness, I know), but pick one that sounds interesting and see if you can produce something. I have used each tool to produce an example of the original Dominoe story, plus links are provided, where available, to examples by other people. Please share your own examples or thoughts in the discussion area of this wiki.
